Komodo National Park covers 1,733 square kilometres of islands, savannah and reef, plus a mainland almost nobody explores. Here is what each stop is really like.
Three bays, one ridge
The most photographed viewpoint in eastern Indonesia. Eight hundred steps take you to a ridge where three crescent bays — one white sand, one black, one pink — fan out below you. Go at sunrise: the light is better and the steps are still cool.
Where the dragons live
Home to roughly 1,700 Komodo dragons across savannah and tamarind forest. Treks always run with an armed park ranger and take between 45 minutes and two hours depending on the loop you choose.
Rose sand and shallow coral
Crushed red organ-pipe coral mixes with white sand to turn the whole beach pink — strongest in the hour after sunrise and just before sunset. The reef starts ten metres offshore and stays shallow, so it suits weak swimmers.
Reef mantas, all year
A cleaning station at Karang Makassar where reef mantas queue up over the coral while wrasse pick them clean. Currents can run hard, so you drift with the flow and the boat follows you. Wingspans of four metres are normal here.
A sandbar that comes and goes
A crescent of white sand in the middle of open turquoise water that only surfaces at low tide. Fifteen minutes from Manta Point, so nearly every itinerary pairs the two.
The quick climb near town
Only 30 minutes from the harbour, with a steep 15-minute scramble to a summit that looks straight down onto a hooked white beach. The first or last stop on most day trips.
Reef straight off the jetty
A small private island where the house reef begins at the end of the jetty. Turtles, blacktip reef sharks and a coral shelf that drops off quickly — good for a half-day escape from town.
Better odds, fewer people
Drier and more open than Komodo Island, which means dragons are often easier to spot around the ranger station and waterholes. The new Loh Buaya boardwalk keeps you elevated above the trails.
Sunrise on the grass ridge
Rolling savannah hills at the northern edge of the park, gold in the dry season and green after the rains. A 45-minute walk up gets you a 360-degree view of the channel — the classic overnight-cruise morning.
Freshwater, for a change
A marble canyon 30 kilometres inland where the river has cut deep pools between the walls. Walk in through farmland, swim the canyon, jump from the rocks if you want to.
Whatever the brochures say, every month here has something going for it. This is the honest version.
Hills still green from the rains, calm crossings, moderate crowds. The best all-round window.
Driest weather and gold savannah, but every viewpoint has company. Book boats two months ahead.
Best underwater visibility of the year and thinning crowds. Our own favourite time to sail.
Peak manta aggregations and lush landscapes, offset by rain squalls and occasional cancelled crossings.
Komodo Airport (LBJ) takes direct flights from Bali (1h 20m), Jakarta and Surabaya. Most international guests connect through Denpasar in the morning and are on the water the same afternoon. The harbour is ten minutes from the terminal — we meet every arrival.
